Bleu de Chanel Parfum Review: Timeless, Iconic & Worth The Hype

Bleu de Chanel has been one of the most successful fragrance franchises for the French luxury brand in recent years.

Like its nearest competitor, Dior Sauvage, the EDT and EDP versions, launched in 2010 and 2014 respectively, was followed by Bleu de Chanel Parfum in 2018. Is a Bleu de Chanel Elixir on the cards, as many people speculate?

We can neither confirm nor deny the rumours. In the meantime, we take a closer look at Bleu de Chanel Parfum.

Scent Notes (According to Fragrantica)

Lemon zest, bergamot, mint, artemisia (top); lavender, pineapple, geranium, green notes (heart); sandalwood, cedar, amberwood, Iso E Super, tonka bean (base).

Before he succeeded Jacques Polge (his father) as the company’s in-house perfumer, Olivier Polge had already produced numerous commercial hits, including Dior Homme EDT (2005), Guerlain Cuir Beluga EDP (2005), Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Rouge EDC (2006), Lancôme La Vie Est Belle EDP (2012), Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb EDT (2012) and Valentino Uomo EDT (2014).

Since assuming the top position in 2016, there’s been no doubt he’s the natural successor to his father.

The Paris-based perfumer has created Chanel No 5 L’Eau EDT (2016), the Les Eaux de Chanel range (2018 onwards) and Boy Chanel EDP (2016), 1957 EDP (2019) and Le Lion de Chanel EDP (2020) for the Les Exclusifs de Chanel private range, among others.

Who Would Like It

Looking for a fragrance that nails versatility, wearability and elegance? Here it is.

Where To Wear It

A big part of Bleu de Chanel Parfum’s appeal is its versatility. There aren’t many fragrances that fit into one’s life as easily as this one.

If you want to feel stylish while breaking a sweat at gym, it will do the job.

At the office, it’s neither intrusive nor domineering, but will make you and others around you feel good.

After hours, you can wear it on a date. It will say you’re sexy and reliable. What could beat that combo?

It’s also a winner from the warm to cool seasons.

Packaging & Presentation

From the dark blue box and bottle to the gold font on them, there’s an air of solid, impenetrable luxury to Bleu de Chanel Parfum.

The magnetic bottle top never fails to give us a thrill when it clicks back into place.

Personal Impressions

Both the EDT and EDP versions of Bleu de Chanel (created by Jacques Polge) are defined by their refined take on citrus and cedar notes, among others. While they have different emphases, they are not radically different fragrances.

Bleu de Chanel Parfum is not a reinvention of the modern aromatic-woody classic, but it certainly offers a new dimension.

Featuring notes of lemon zest, bergamot and mint, the opening pulls you in immediately with its crisp spiciness. It’s dangerously addictive, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself doing more re-sprays than usual.

Notes of lavender and geranium build on the freshness of the intro with their aromatic greenery.

The drydown of sandalwood (sustainably sourced from New Caledonia) elevates this fragrance above its EDT and EDP predecessors. Smooth and creamy, it’s a grown-up, big boy treatment of the precious wood. Cedar enhances the woody character of the fragrance, while the synthetic Iso E Super gives it velvety muskiness.

Bleu de Chanel Parfum is polished perfection. It’s been another best seller for Chanel. And justifiably so.

Some people have accused it of being “boring”, “safe” and “predictable”. We disagree. It’s Chanel at its classic and classy best

Similar Fragrances To Consider

If you’re insistent on going the battle of the blue bottles route, all of which are variations on the freshie theme, take your pick from Dior Sauvage EDP, YSL Y EDP and Parfums de Marly Percival EDP.

However, we think it’s best to focus on the best sandalwood fragrances, as that’s where Bleu de Chanel Parfum’s beauty lies.

For rougher takes on the sandalwood theme, check out Le Labo Santal 33 EDP and Comme des Garçons Blue Santal EDP.

Softer, more sensual options include Boucheron La Collection Santal de Kandy EDP and Creed Original Santal EDP.

Diptyque Tam Dao EDT is a classic in the genre.

Zadig & Voltaire This Is Love! For Him EDT is a well-priced designer choice.
