Deodorant isn’t something we used to give much thought to. When I was growing up, I didn’t even know what it was until the morning my mother presented me with a bottle of Lynx (what you call Axe in America), an overdue gesture that basically said: “Puberty stinks, douse yourself in this”.

Nowadays, we’ve become very aware of the ingredients in everything that goes in or on our bodies, scouring toothpaste and shampoo bottles for sulphates and deodorants for aluminum.
Still, there’s a misconception that when it comes to deodorant and antiperspirant, “natural” means “stinky” and a lot of people would much rather deal with aluminum that B.O.
But it doesn’t have to be the case. Sick of my favorite white band tees being ruined by the torrid mixture of aluminum and sweat, I started to investigate natural deodorants.
And not just natural ones — natural ones that smelled wonderful. Turns out, great smelling men’s deodorants aren’t so hard to find.
Which Deodorant Should You Choose?
What type of deodorant you choose should be based on your own body’s chemistry — however there has been recent studies that link some common ingredients in deodorant and antiperspirant to Alzheimer’s, cancer, and severe allergies. Ingredients to look out for include aluminum, talc, and parabens.
The good news is there’s been a boom in natural and organic men’s deodorant so you have plenty to choose from. This is also good news for men with sensitive skin or allergies.
So without further ado, here are our five favorites.
The Top 5 Best Smelling Deodorants for Men
Native Tea Tree & Sage Deodorant
Our top pick
We loved all five of the deodorants we tried but nothing was as impressive on all counts as Native’s Tea Tree & Sage. It’s paraben and aluminum-free and works every bit as effectively as a standard antiperspirant.
Not only that, but it smells incredible. They do a matching shower gel which I used this morning and now I can’t stop smelling my arm.
Oars & Alps Fresh Ocean Splash Deodorant
Oars & Alps’ aluminum-free, alcohol-free, glycol-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free, sulfate-free products are a bit more ‘manly’ scented, but in a truly lovely way.
Fresh Ocean Splash smells every bit as invigorating as the name suggests and works like a charm. They also helpfully warn of the five-week period it’ll take for your body to adjust to aluminum-free deodorant.
I drank four flat whites with this on, and while a heart attack felt imminent, I still wasn’t sweaty.
Malin & Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant
A pricey option but an incredibly effective one. Has a strong smell going on but doesn’t continue to announce its presence throughout the day as much as you might fear it will.
I wore this on the London Underground and came out still smelling fresh. For those of you who’ve never been to London, that’s a near miracle.
Lush The Guv’ner Dusting Powder
Something a little different from the home of beautiful-smelling natural products. Pour the talc-like (but not talc-containing) Guv’ner into your hand, pat it onto your pits and it promises that it won’t fight with your fragrance of choice for supremacy.
It stuck to its promise and held up well, but had definitely stopped working by the following morning, so if impromptu sleepovers are a possibility, make sure you bring it with you.
Few things in life smell as good as Aesop’s products. This aluminum-free deodorant spray might be seriously on the pricey side but it has a gorgeous unisex herbal scent that could potentially lead to getting caught with your head in your pits over the course of the day.
It’s a struggle but not impossible to stay smelling good as a guy. Still looking for the right deodorant for you? If you have sensitive skin, check out our review of men’s deodorants for sensitive skin.
